Geo-Informatics Centre for Forestry Climate Change and Livelihood Support
Looking at the enormous relevance of geospatial technologies to natural resource planning and decision making, IIFM has started a Centre for Geoinformatics dedicated to natural resource monitoring and management. The establishment of the Centre for Geoinformatics at IIFM is in consonance with the newly launched Digital India initiative of the Government of India in which GIS based planning and decision making find a prominent place. The Centre for Geoinformatics aims to evolve into a centre of excellence in this area providing expertise and support to sectoral institutions and line departments working in the area of environmental and natural resource management.
The Centre undertakes capacity building initiatives to produce skilled human resources by organising training programmes and certification courses in Geoinformatics. The Centre engages in undertaking collaborative application oriented research in the application of Geoinformatics to Natural Resource Management & Environmental problems. The centre also offers its expertise by undertaking consulting assignments for developing custom solutions.
With the use of Geospatial data on the rise, the centre envisages engaging in creation and dissemination of GIS ready datasets to help researchers and departmental decision makers better visualize problems using geospatial technologies.
The Centre for Geoinformatics, in due course, aspires to emerge as a knowledge and ideation hub which engages in organizing conferences, seminars, workshops and create suitable fora for exchange of ideas amongst the geospatial community working in the NRM and environmental domains.
