Research is one of the important activities at IIFM through which IIFM constantly strives to develop frontiers of knowledge in various areas of forest and natural resource management. Research activities at the institute are focused on finding such applications of management concepts, tools and techniques that can assist a forest manager in achieving effectiveness and efficiency in forestry operations. Most of the research projects undertaken by the faculty at IIFM are therefore, of an applied nature. Findings of research projects are also used for development of teaching material and case studies on various aspects of forest management. Many national and international organizations fund research projects at IIFM.

Research activities at IIFM External Funded Research Projects Research projects are commissioned to individual faculty members by institutions/organizations to carry out research on important areas of Natural Resource Management on the basis of individual capabilities in the concerned area. Faculty at IIFM develop proposals in specific research areas and seek funding from various institutes/organizations etc.

IIFM Funded projects
Round the year research proposals and case studies are invited from the faculty for financial support through IIFM research grant. The whole process is done through a transparent procedure. An innovative Small Grants Programme (SGP) was initiated to equitably distribute research fund across faculty areas and faculty members (spread-it-thin) since 2014 to encourage faculty members and provide them with a springboard to try innovative research ideas. So far nine proposals of research and case studies were received under the SGP. Three case studies and four research proposals were sanctioned to six faculties within the stipulated time frame.
Selections of proposals received are based on technical soundness and expected outcome. The whole process is done through a transparent procedure.

Research Committees
External Research Advisory Committee of IIFM
In the 78th meeting of BOG of IIFM, the Research Advisory Committee of the Institute was constituted. In the committee, there are about 06 internal members including Director IIFM and rest 10 are external expert. The term of the committee is for two years.

The mandate of the committee was as follows:

  • To strengthen the research activity of the Institute.
  • To develop linkages with national and international forestry research organizations.
  • To hold discussion with various stakeholder and set the research priorities for the Institute.
  • To monitor the progress of various Research Project / Studies undertaken by the Institute
