Research at IIFM constantly strives to develop new frontiers of knowledge in various areas of natural resource management and sustainability. Research focuses on solution oriented and socially relevant themes to generate knowledge that can assist different stakeholders in forest and natural resource management sectors. Most of the research projects undertaken at IIFM are of an applied nature. The research outputs are disseminated not only as high impact scientific papers, popular articles and policy briefs and are also translated to teaching material and case studies on various aspects of natural resource management. Research projects are funded by national and international agencies and in collaborative networks with diverse stakeholders that lead to research of contemporary global relevance.

Externally Funded Research Activities at IIFM: External funded research projects are commissioned to individual faculty members by institutions/organizations to carry out research on important areas of Natural Resource Management on the basis of individual capabilities in the concerned area. Faculty at IIFM develop proposals in specific research areas and seek funding from various institutes/organizations/agencies etc.

IIFM Funded Small Grant Program (SGP) projects
An innovative Small Grants Programme (SGP) was initiated to equitable distribution of research funds across faculty areas and among faculty members since 2014 to provide a springboard to try innovative research ideas. Round the year research proposals are invited from the Faculty and Res. Assoc./Assistants. for financial support through IIFM research grant. Selections of proposals received are based on technical soundness and relevance of expected outcome.
