The training programmes, widely known, as Management Development Programmes (MDPs), is one of the pioneer activities of the Institute. The Institute has been organizing short-term training courses, seminars and workshops to transfer technical and managerial knowledge and skills. The focus of these programmes are on theorizing, conceptualizing, analyzing and synthesizing various management techniques/tools, ideas and concepts relevant to the natural, forestry and allied sector. These MDPs aims to the skill enhancement needs of a cross-section of practicing professionals from government, non-government, corporate, industry and academic institutions, holding positions at various levels. The MDPs offered by IIFM are appreciated for their appliedresearch based content and for sensitizing the participants on various issues, policy changes, with ever-evolving concepts, techniques and tools in management and development discipline and their applicability to the forestry, environment and developmental sectors. In addition, the MDPs provide a platform for experience sharing among the participants belonging to varied backgrounds and thus facilitate mutual learning among participants. IIFM offers wide varieties of programmes both in-campus as well as off-campus, which includes organization specific tailormade sponsored programmes, fee- based programmes, international programmes, ToTs, workshops and seminars. The institute has state-of-Art MDP infrastructure including classrooms with hitech audio-visual systems. For comfortable lodging & boarding, it has guest house/executive hostels. Besides, it has sports facilities for recreation, library and internet facilities for use of the participants.
 
 
Core competency of IIFM: 
 
• IIFM has multidisciplinary internal faculty covering life sciences, social sciences, forest management, information technology and management areas. This enables the institute to analyze issues from different perspectives covering ecology, management, livelihoods and governance aspects.  
• IIFM has a wide training experience with its executive development programs, with several such programs conducted for forest officers and executives. Has conducted similar trainings in the past funded by JICA, UNDP, WB, GIZ, EU and others 
• IIFM has experience in using training methods suitable to working professionals such as the case based teaching, field visits for real-life learnings, grounding the theory - frameworks, concepts, models, tools etc. Class exercises for hands-on experience and customizing the training to client’s context. 
• IIFM has in the recent past conducted trainings for officials of the SAARC countries including forest officials of Bangladesh and Agriculture Ministry officials from Bhutan 
• IIFM is undertaking a mid-term evaluation of forestry interventions funded by NMCG in the five states of Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, West Bengal. The learnings from this evaluation will be used to showcase the best practices and highlight the common pitfalls. Policy implications and lessons for practice will also be underscored.
