Dr. K. Ravichandran, IFS

Dr. K. Ravichandran belongs to Indian Forest Service of 1996 batch of AGMUT cadre. He has M.Sc and M.Phil in Botany from Madurai Kamaraj University, Madurai and Post Graduate Diploma in Forestry Management (PGDFM) from Indian Institute of Forest Management, Bhopal. He is an Associate of Indira Gandhi National Forest Academy (AIGNFA), equivalent to M.Sc in Forestry. He did his P.hD in Forestry from FRI Deemed University, Dehra Dun. He started his career as an Asst. Manager, Plantations, Sanghi Industries, Hyderabad in 1993 and then worked as a Scientist in Wildlife Extension faculty, Wildlife Institute of India between 1994 and 1996 before joining the Indian Forest Service.
Dr. K. Ravichandran served in various capacities in the Department of Environment and Forests, Andaman and Nicobar Islands and worked in Territorial and Wildlife Divisions as Divisional Forest Officer and Deputy Conservator of Forests. He has worked as Head, Wildlife Circle and Ecotourism Circle and Conservator of Forests, Headquarters and Deputy Secretary, Department of Environment and Forests, Andaman and Nicobar Administration. He has also worked as Head, Territorial Circle, Research, and Working Plan Circle as Chief Conservator of Forests and looked after Coastal Zone Management and Forest Conservation as Additional Principal Chief Conservator of Forests in Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
He worked as Head of the Department of Environment and Forests, Dadra & Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu and served as Secretary, Department of Environment & Forests, Industries, Transport, Fisheries, Port and Light House and Tribal Development in Dadra & Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu Administration.
He worked as an Assistant Silviculturist (Research and Experimental), Head of Office and Head, Forestry Research Extension in Institute of Forest Genetics and Tree Breeding (IFGTB), Coimbatore of Indian Council of Forestry Research and Education (ICFRE).
Dr. K. Ravichandran possesses a blend of administrative, management, research and academic experiences. His research and academic interests include Tropical Forest Management, Coastal Areas Management, Island Ecosystems, Marine Protected Areas, Ecosystem and Landscape Approaches, Conservation and Management of critical habitats viz. Coral Reefs, Mangroves and Seagrass Meadows, Forest People Interface, Restoration Ecology, Species Recovery Programmes, Integrated Coastal Regulation Zone (ICRZ) Plans/Integrated Island Management Plans (IIMPs), Environmental Pollution and Management, and Biodiversity conservation.
He has authored and co-authored 26 research papers in peer reviewed international and national journals and 5 books and reports. He has written the first ever Management Plan of Marine Protected Area, the famous Mahatma Gandhi Marine National Park, Wandoor, South Andaman. As CCF (Research and Working Plan), he was instrumental in revision of Working Plans for Baratang, Middle Andaman and Mayabunder Forest Divisions of Andaman and Nicobar Islands. He drafted the Ecotourism Policy Guidelines for Andaman and Nicobar Islands in 2015 and Industrial Policy for Daman and Diu and Dadra and Nagar Haveli in 2018.
As a Co-investigator, he was involved in developing two Eucalyptus camadulensis clones IFGTB-EC6 and IFGTB-EC7. The clones were released in 2014 by the Variety Release Committee for commercial cultivation in Peninsular India (Southern States and Union Territory of Puducherry).
He is a Co-inventor of a process patent “Tree mean diameter estimation from terrestrial images using digital camera” (Patent number 290429; Patentee: IFGTB). He is a life member of Indian Society of Agroforestry.
