THE INSTITUTE
IIFM was established as an autonomous institution under the Ministry of Agriculture in 1982 and later brought under the Ministry of Environment and Forest, Government of India. Since then, the Institute has developed itself as an educational, training, research and consultancy organization in the domain of environment and sustainability
Vision and Mission
The Institute, being sectoral in nature, imparts education in Forest Management, which is a judicious mix of Forestry, Environment, Social and Management sciences. It constantly endeavours to identify the problems of the community, especially the forest dwellers through need-based research and serves as a reservoir of knowledge in the area of forest management to catalyze integration of modern scientific and indigenous knowledge, suitable to the Indian context. The Vision of the Institute, as identified in its Perspective Plan 2006-16, is:
“To be among the leading international institutions in the area of environment, forest and development management and be respected, both nationally as well as internationally, for its outstanding contributions in the fields of education, training, research, consultancy and thought leadership.”
The above vision is translated into the following Mission statements:

- To serve different stakeholders of Environment, Forestry and Development sectors and the society in general, through the development of knowledge and its dissemination, human resource development through education and training activities and providing assistance in formulation and advocacy of relevant policies and strategies.
- To be a national institution with an international perspective and outreach.
- To build a culture of excellence, achievement, cooperation and service within a framework of strong ethical patterns of behaviour informed by universal values.
Objectives
The objectives set for the Institute are:
- Provide training in management and related subjects for persons from the Indian Forest Service, Forest Departments, Forest Development Corporation and Forest related industries with a view to equip them to practice the art and profession of management of forestry development.
- Inculcate an appreciation in those selected for training, that conservation is of overriding importance in the management of living natural resources and that the primary role of forests is the vital ecological and environmental purpose they serve.
- Select and prepare outstanding and talented young persons for careers leading to management responsibility in forestry and the forest-related system.
- Meet the need of Indian forestry and forest-related industry and commerce in respect of up-to-date information on forestry management through research, consulting and publication.
- Assist, institute and carry out research in matters concerning the use of management and allied techniques and methods conducive to the development of forestry in the country.
- Institute awards, scholarships, fellowships, prizes and medals in accordance with the rules and bye-laws.
- Create partnerships, affiliations and other classes of professional or honorary membership or office, as the society may consider necessary.
