IFWCS Standards
IFWCS-PRAMAAN certification standards consist of broad frameworks of Criteria, Indicators and Verifiers, that recognizes the environmental, economic, and social objectives of forests, and are the basis for monitoring the sustainable forest management practices under IFWCS-PRAMAAN. These standards have been adopted from the principles of sustainable forest management and the National Set of 8 Criteria and 37 Indicators on Sustainable Management of Forests developed in the Bhopal-India Process in 2001, one of the 9 internationally accepted frameworks for the Criteria and Indicators (C&I) approach to sustainable forest management. The national set of C&I on sustainable management of forests was piloted by IIFM Bhopal in 26 forest divisions spread over 12 states of the country over a period of 18 years (1998-2016).

  •     Indian Forest Management Standard (IFMS)

The IFMS contains the requirements for Forest Management (FM) certification and comprises of 8 Criteria, 69 Indicators, and 253 Verifiers. The IFMS is an integral part of the National Working Plan Code (NWPC-2023) and has been developed to support and strengthen the regulatory framework within which the forest managers operate,. The set of these requirements facilitates the achievement of the environmental, economic and social aspects of SFM.

  •     Trees Outside Forests (Management) Standard

The Trees Outside Forests (Management) standard describes the requirements for the Trees Outside Forest (Management) Certification under the IFWCS-PRAMAAN. This standard is developed to monitor the performance of TOF including plantations/agroforestry on private, government or community owned lands, other than the territorial and protected areas designated as forest lands, for their sustainable management through the framework of 5 criteria, 22 indicators, and 76 verifiers. This is a comprehensive standard developed with the objective of its applicability for diverse types of plantations/agroforestry systems.

  •     Chain of Custody (Management) Standard

The Chain of Custody (Management) certification standard of the Indian Forest and Wood Certification Scheme allows organizations to provide reliable and verifiable information that forest and tree-based products are sourced from IFWCS certified sustainably managed forests and/or trees outside forests / plantations. The IFWCS certification claim and the PRAMAAN label communicate the sustainable origin of a forest or wood-based product and aims to promote the demand for, and supply of products sourced from sustainably managed forests and/or TOF areas. This communication encourages market-driven continuous improvement in management practices of the forests, TOFs, and the wood-based industry. To ensure smooth export of products made in India, the rigorous due diligence, traceability, and risk‑mitigation requirements of  Regulation (EU) 2023/1115 on deforestation-free products (EUDR) have been added into the IFWCS-PRAMAAN Chain of Custody (CoC) standard.
